In this photo, Ian is a representation of Rahim. When he pushes the water fountain it can be connected to when he spoke to Amir on the phone about Kabul. This push makes the water fountain produce water, which represents Amir’s decision to visit Afghanistan and confront his past. If you go too long without water, you will slowly die, and if you go too long without confronting your past, you're going to slowly lose your mind. Therefore, when Ian drinks the water that represents Amir visiting Afghanistan, he is confronting his past.
It is very interesting how you compared the water fountain to Amir's need to go back to Afghanistan
ReplyDeleteA very imaginative metaphor. Another aspect you could evaluate is if Amir only confronted his past, if the water kept running, it would eventually dry up and fail to run anymore, maybe symbolizing that Amir can't live in the past forever, he has to move on at some point.
ReplyDeleteYour metaphor is very creative and nuanced. You could further emphasize the necessity of water for life and how, without it, Amir would grow weaker and weaker, accurately portraying how Amir's constant running from his regrets and past further break him down as time goes on.
ReplyDeleteYour metaphor uses the different components of the image very creatively. It was a good choice to connect the water to the necessity of confronting your past. Additionally, pushing the button could represent how sometimes it is necessary for someone else to push you to do something. Not everyone has the power to push themselves to accomplish things, so the motivation from Rahim Khan allowed Amir to redeem his past actions.
ReplyDeleteI like how you use the link between water and vitality in your metaphor, as it really connects to the rekindling of Amir's vitality through his visit to Kabul. I think that the metaphor could be improved if Ian did not represent both Rahim AND Amir at the same time.
ReplyDeleteIan, I hope that water was tasty.
ReplyDeleteAlso, interesting choice of multiple images. I think you're the only group I've seen to do this.
The metaphor was very creative and insightful. It accurately describes how the push of the water fountain represents the push from Rahim to motivate Amir to seek redemption. It also shows how you cannot get the water, or seek redemption, unless you press on the button of the fountain. The "push" represents the effort being put into achieving redemption.
ReplyDeleteAt first, when I looked at your image, it seemed silly and weird. But when I looked at what you wrote, it made a lot more sense to me. You did a very good job of explaining this metaphor and connecting it to the book. In fact, the water could also represent Amir's guilt, which is released every single time he takes on a new challenge/task (represented by pushing the button).
