Rahim Khan and Baba's Relationship

A doorstop not outside of a bathroom.
Rahim Khan is like a doorstop.  In our metaphor, we would consider Baba to be the door, and Rahim Khan supports him even after his indiscretions.  Rahim essentially props him up and makes sure he does not close himself off from Amir.  Like a doorstop, Rahim seems to constantly propagate this space in between, acting as the potential for Amir and Baba's relationship to heal after Baba's secrets are revealed.  This can be symbolized as Rahim holding open the space between the door and the doorframe, in order to give Amir a chance to come in and forgive his father.  The rubber on the end of the doorstop symbolizes how Rahim has always acted as the softer and seemingly more supportive father figure to Amir, even softening the blow of Baba's secret.  This soft rubber is in juxtaposition with Baba's cold, hard steel of the door, a parallel to how they treated Amir throughout his childhood and even continuing to his adult life.

  1. I really like the detail, especially the comparison between the rubber (Rahim) and steel of the door (Baba). Another good thing to note might be that Rahim Khan (to an extent) is the softer, gentler parental figure that Amir never really had, almost like a pseudo-mother.

  2. Your idea is very well thought out and layered. Another connection could be made of how Rahim, acting as the doorstop, softens what could be very harsh and cold treatment from Baba during Amir's childhood like a slamming door.

  3. This is really well thought out and uses an everyday object to describe a complex idea with many people.

  4. I love your metaphor. It doesn't seem forced and makes sense all the way through. You could also mention the dirty floor and say that Rahim protects Amir from corruption that is represented by the contaminated floor.

  5. I like how you used every aspect of the doorstop and the overall picture in your metaphor, even going to the rubber on the end of the doorstop. I also think that the fact that the door is closed could show how Baba is dead now and how Rahim will soon follow.

  6. This is a very interesting metaphor, really well thought out! I think the rubber at the end of the doorstop is a creative addition to the metaphor. Another connection you can make is that Rahim Khan supports the door to make sure it does not slam harshly, like Baba's secrets that he revealed to Amir.

  7. I really enjoy how you even found a metaphor for the rubber on the doorstop! I think another aspect you could talk about is how after Baba's death, Rahim Khan moves on to helping Amir. (Ex. Making him go and find Hassan's son)
