Covering up the cracks

Throughout the book, Amir constantly runs away from his problems without dealing with them. Choosing to ignore these problems, Amir hopes they will disappear but in reality, it only escalates the issue and causes further tensions. The hole in the middle of the sidewalk represents Amir's childhood problems and the concrete filling shows his half-hearted attempts to cover them. With the cracks still peaking through the concrete filling, it is evident that the issue is still unresolved parallel to Amir's problems still influencing his actions, only worsening as time moves on.

  1. I think you metaphor is really creative and how Amir is using "cement" to cover up his "cracked past". It also seems like the 4 lines come up and meet in the middle to create "the bigger picture" or "the whole thing". This meeting point could be Sohrab.

  2. I liked the fact that you included the idea of a hole being filled with concrete and not just the concrete itself, and I also think that the filling is also broken in some places, which can show that Amir is trying many ways to try and get over these problems and many people around him are also trying to help him, but they aren't direct and this adds onto the fact that they aren't solved and are still influencing his actions.

  3. I think your choice to analyze the condition of the patch shows a very nuanced perspective of something that people just walk over without noticing. It's definitely very accurate in that Amir has been unable to patch up all the wrong he has done. I think this could also show that someone will have to patch it up again later to fully repair the damage, much like what Amir has to do when he returns to Afghanistan.

  4. I like how Amir's unresolved issues can be represented in this attempt to cover up past problems half-heartedly. The blatancy of the incompetence of the attempt to fix the issue is clear to us, but to Amir, it was less than apparent. Amir was ignorant, but we can see the mistakes in his temporary solution and the clear change in appearance.

  5. A very good picture for what you're trying to compare it to.

  6. The parallel between the analysis of your image and Amir's experiences is really strong! I like how you use the idea of the cement filling to show how Amir attempted to cover up his past, yet he's unable to hide it completely, like how the cracks are still showing through the cement.

  7. This is super insightful. Even though Amir hides his problems in this manner, those who know him and take the time to notice his problems see that Amir is not doing everything he can to fix them. It's like when Rahim Khan figures out that Amir let Hassan be raped, but did nothing about it.
