Your eyes gazing softly at me
From across the dinner table
Olive skin glowing in the light
A sweet voice asking, “How was your day”
How has it taken me 15 years
To learn to appreciate something you have said to me since I started talking
Standing only at 5’3” but having the power of someone 10 feet tall
Being the one person who protects me
Keeping me out of harm’s way
How has it taken me 15 years
To realize how close you keep me to your heart
Every day you return home
Slouched over from a long day
The stress of the world burdening you
The pain of age threatening to get to you
Yet you smile through it all
How has it taken me 15 years
To understand the amount of perseverance you have
I am sorry for my past ignorance
For not thoroughly treasuring everything you do
I promise I will make it all up to you
Now I appreciate, I realize, I understand
But I cannot stress one thing enough
Mom, I love you

I really like how you began the poem and brought the reader in. My favorite line is "To learn to appreciate something you have said to me since I started talking". I also wrote about my mother and her influence in my life so it was interesting to see a different aspect of the relationship.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a sweet poem, I really like the repetition of "how has it taken me 15 years.." I also love the imagery!
ReplyDeleteThis made me realize I should appreciate my mom! I liked how you said it took you 15 years to notice what she said and I think that is very sweet and relatable.
