The Call of The Void

Most people think
they’ll never die.
What is a happy death,
Beyond immediacy’s horizon,
But something to be ignored?

Most people will never stare death in the face.
Most people will never leave a note at death’s door
And freeze with their hand on the knob.

Most people never look down,
And see the void below.
Most people don’t realize
That death is always walking right beside you.

That everything you touch will eventually forget you
Is always right below you.
That nothing you ever do will really matter
Is a short mental jump away,
Just under the sugar glass bridge of meaning.

Death tempts those who dare look down
And teeter at the edge of realization,
Trying to convince themselves they’re on solid ground,
But once you turn and see death beside you
You’ll never forget He’s there
enticing you to jump.

  1. I really like how you used diction to express the dark/mysterious tone of your poem. Your use of repeating "most people" adds a powerful idea of continuity through your poem, and I also really like how you juxtapose the idea of "everything" and "nothing" in the fourth stanza. My favorite line would probably be "Just under the sugar glass bridge of meaning", because there's a lot of imagery connected to that line.

  2. I think this is an especially cool poem. Your line, "a short mental jump away / Just under the sugar glass bridge of meaning." is super cool because not only does it use enjambment, but the imagery that you produce here is super mystical. Good job!

  3. I liked the dark imagery and description in your poem. My favorite line is "You’ll never forget He’s there enticing you to jump" because it can be interpreted so many ways. I think the poem is very deep and meaningful.
