Worth

I let myself down again.

Cried myself to sleep.

Because
as society constantly tells me,
I can’t consider myself a successful person
unless I am a successful student.

Unless I am perfect.

At the same time telling me
that no one’s perfect.
That there’s no way
I can reach
the high bar
that the world has set
for me.

But I am so much more
than the way
I measure up
to the world’s definition
of perfection.

I am so much more
than a set
of numbers
on a piece of paper.

A high school transcript
that all my colleges will see.
But only tells half the story.

Because
for some reason,
that determines whether or not I am worthy to be successful.
Whether I am worthy to be happy.
Whether the rollercoaster of my life goes up
or down.

And
for some reason,

they get to decide what matters to me.

  1. 1. My favorite aspect of the poem is the 5th stanza, where you start using enjambment to break up the lines. It makes the poetry flow with an interesting rhythm.

    2. My favorite line is :"I am so much more
    than a set
    of numbers
    on a piece of paper."

    3. I like how you portray that college admission determines the worth of your life, which is something that I can relate to.
