Carpe Diem
Carpe Diem
Today is today
Today is not tomorrow
Today is not yesterday
Today is only today
There is a flower
In a pot
On a windowsill
It radiates a purple bloom
Reflecting the sunlight
Bringing colour into the world
Yesterday is yesterday
Not today
Not tomorrow
Yesterday is only yesterday
There is no flower
In the pot
On the windowsill
A pot full of dirt
And nothing else
A desolate desert of soil
Tomorrow is tomorrow
Not yesterday
Not today
Tomorrow is only tomorrow
There is a flower
At least what’s left of it
In the pot
On the windowsill
The brown dry petals
Fall off slowly
The setting rays of the sun
Diffuse through the small chew holes of critters
Yesterday may have held nothing
Tomorrow may have nothing
But today
Has everything
Hold onto today
Tight
Like a balloon
Before it flies away.
Savor today
Like a cherry-flavoured
Lollipop
Before you’re down to the stick
Capture today
In a
Photograph
Before the colour fades

I really like the repetition in this poem as well as the imagery.
ReplyDeleteI liked how your poem had a very good image as well as included a very nice title. My favorite line was "Diffuse through the small chew holes of critters."
ReplyDeleteI really like the message and lollipop metaphor. I like how the poem starts off very slowly, and comes together in the end.
