| Calliope, muse of fiction |
it is
3 in the morning
and yet
i am not asleep
because
how am i meant to
close my eyes
and rest
when my muse
lies beside me
on my bed
her dark hair, loose,
fanned out
fanned out
like a peacock's tail
on the pillow
mixing with mine
on the pillow
mixing with mine
her arms curl
around my back
hands tracing words
on my collarbone
and she murmurs in my ear
"have the hero meet his lover
on page eight
"his best friend will betray him
in chapter fifteen
"he will need that sword you gave him again
on page thirty-six
"it will hurt, but he will live
start a new chapter. the story goes on."
in chapter fifteen
"he will need that sword you gave him again
on page thirty-six
"it will hurt, but he will live
start a new chapter. the story goes on."
her speech is soft
and sweet,
but her words reach me
too quickly
for idle listening
and as my fingers race on my keyboard
like horses gallop
on a pebble-laden beach,
my muse murmurs my story to me
and i know i will not sleep until
sunrise
when she leaves
and when i rise
from halfway-dreaming,
halfway-writing,
i will stare at pages upon pages
of her thoughts in my words
and i will wonder
where
did such beauty come
and why
does it always leave
before dawn?
I really like the tone and flow of this poem I thought the way you did not capitlaize the letter i throughout the poem was interesting. My favorite line is 'of her thoughts in my words' I like how you make your imagination and creativity personified.
ReplyDeleteI like all of the poetic devices used in this poem. It displays a variety of writing styles, yet every line is cohesive. Also, the poem is not cluttered. My favorite line is "i will stare at pages upon pages / of her thoughts in my words," because it very abstract but it also creates a clear image.
