Halfway in love
You’re sweet like the name Caroline
And all the things a southern belle would say
Sweet tea, honey, the soft brown fur of an old work horse
Long grasses swaying in sunburnt fields of wildflowers
You’re fresh like springtime
Morning dew sparkling on the grass like sugar water
Cherry blossom, rose petal
Fireflies humming softly in freshly grown grass that goes past your ankles
Dark clouds barely raining, washing away any remnants of the past
You’re beautiful like nighttime
The Milky Way trying to to capture every star
A glimmer in the night drawing pictures of constellations
A shooting star where every wish is already coming true
A love song picked on an old guitar sung under the moon in slow rhythms and hushed whispers
You’re comfortable like autumn
Warm fireplaces and warmer laughter
An armchair you’ve kept for so many years it remembers just how you sit
A picture frame where you can name the moment it was taken
Family playing board games in a living room just big enough for everyone
You’re lovely like a bird
Singing songs that I don’t hear the lyrics to, just the sonorous sounds
Soft feathers, light flying
When you play that guitar it brings a feeling that can only be described as home
Careful strumming in the evening trying to get that one note right
But it already all sounds perfect to me
You’re power like a spotlight
Capturing the attention of every eye in a theatre
Words that echo around the hall, encasing everyone in your voice
Powerful and commanding, demanding respect with grace and gratitude
Entrapping me in every movement, every moment
You’re hate like snowfall
Light upon the ground but never a snowstorm of anger
Rational as the weather with not a single breeze but it’s just cold enough for a shiver
Snow that makes me want to light a fire and melt it all down
But I could never be mad at the snowflakes for falling below 32
You’re love like valentine's day
Pink perfection hearts with melt-in-your-mouth chocolate squares
Roses without thorns and petals that don’t wilt
Wind enough for scarves and hats and ice skates on a frozen pond
Homemade cards with cheesy pickup lines written in sparkly pen
I am halfway in love with the whole of you
Every mess and every broom you have been and will be
Every spring, summer, fall, winter, every made-up season in between
Every snowfall, every snowmelt, every river, stream, and lake
I am halfway in love with you
Please tell me you are too
Because if you are not
I will forever remain in love
But only
Halfway

Sydney, queen of poetry, I loved your poem, your descriptions and style are very similar to what I like to write and read so it was A+. I love "A shooting star where every wish is already coming true" and "I am halfway in love with the whole of you" is AMAZING.
ReplyDeleteThis poem is so sweet and flowing, and I love the "a glimmer in the night drawing pictures of constellations". Great devices and beautiful writing!
ReplyDeleteYour poem was beautiful and I really liked how you used the poetic devices. I like your line breaks at the end of the poem, which makes the poem really cute.
ReplyDeleteI really like your poem wow it's so soft n sweet n quiet, everything goes together really well. My favorite line is probably "Singing songs that I don’t hear the lyrics to" despite the fact that other lines like "I am halfway in love with the whole of you" are more clever (and also really good) that one just felt really nice to me.
ReplyDeleteThis poem is absolutely, heartbreakingly beautiful. The metaphors and following explanations thereof encapsulate the whole of a person, and the end of the poem shows the depth the speaker's ardor towards them. I'm shook.
