Prayer in 14

Amethyst quartz crystals worn bring wisdom
Wrapped in golden hairs around priests’ knuckles
Light cascades through unto God’s high kingdom
Now when I pray, my knees only buckle
Stain glass windows, Madonna calls me forth
His brilliance lands on scalps and white cassocks
I’ve flipped through scriptures, they’ve led me due north
Rug burned knees, elbows dug into hassocks
Confession doesn’t lend itself to gain
For years and life I’ll give my servitude
Only their knowledge can hint at Your pain
Why is it when I beg, Your name secludes?
His hand on my shoulder, firm grip, a squeeze
I close my eyes once more and beg, Lord, please

  1. I really like the ambiguity of your poem. Although it is really detailed and specific in some parts, like "Amethyst quartz crystals worn bring wisdom / Wrapped in golden hairs around priests’ knuckles", it can be broad and reaching in other parts, which gives it a universality that can be applied to a number of ideas/situations.

  2. Wow, this is one you really have to think about! I love your subtle rhyming scheme every couple of lines, especially with "cassocks" and "hassocks" (although I don't know what either of those words means). My favorite line is probably "His hand on my shoulder, firm grip, a squeeze" because it really gives me the image of comfort and safety.
