Seattle 4/16

Cool breeze travels from the water inward towards the city
The earthy smell of ground coffee wafts through the air
The sounds of the city create a beautiful cacophony
Cadences and intonations meld to form a slight hum
Cherry blossoms create a blanket separating me from the blue sky
The cobblestones create a path leading towards a different world
Narrow alleys reveal the truth
The beautiful crisp air is suddenly tarnished by an unclean odor
Silence takes hold and insights fear
It’s broken by jerky unsettling sounds
My heart races faster
My eyes do not divert from the path ahead
For I know what lies just beyond my range of vision
My mind nonetheless, is desperate for just a slight glance
I falter and look to the side
My eyes meet hers
Suddenly I’m entranced by a vision of dark sies
Cold nights
Pangs of hunger
Shaking, crying, longing

Hopelessness

  1. The detail in this poem really allows the reader to be there with the author and this poem has this sense of movement that allows the reader to move alongside the author in Seattle.

  2. The contrast and imagery in this poem are really strong. My favorite line is "Cadences and intonations meld to form a slight hum", the imagery really helps put the reader in the setting.
