SLUT.

SLUT.

what if being called a slut became a good thing?
it was seen as the best compliment someone could give you.
it would mark the epitome of the perfect person.

a slut.
a sweet little unforgettable thing
that no one knew they could live without.

they’re the the sweetest honey
touching the tip of the tongue,
making even the gloomiest old man smile fondly.

unforgettable memories of the insignificant things that they used to do,
like spread discrete snickles through the class
or make the entire room break out into roaring laughter.

leaving us with the most unforgettable memories
of spending summer days running through the bushes with smiles plastered on our face,
spending winter days snuggled under knit blankets with cups of hot cocoa warming our hands

and to think of how we judge a slut now.
a shameful, dirty girl
who doesn’t have a shred of self-respect for themselves.

but what if that were all to change?
what if the roles were reversed?
what would you think of this slut?

  1. I loved this. I really enjoyed your humanizing of individuals we associate with the derogatory term and your trying to lift and liberate/ reclaim the word to have new meaning

  2. I really liked how you took a term that society typically associates with negative and bad but wrote from a perspective where it is instead appreciated and accepted.

  3. This is a very interesting take on things. I like the fact that you question constructs and argue that being called a slut could be a good thing. It reminds people that words are what we make them, and that vocabulary and usage changes, and can be changed, over time.

  4. I really like the ideas you brought up in your poem and the way you wrote it really provokes thought and relates the derogatory term to other things associated with good. my favorite line was "a sweet little unforgettable thing".
