Sprout

One day the seed was planted
From then on you’re following your own roots
Choosing your own paths, embracing emotions

When reaching for a goal don’t expect the world
Expect yourself to fail before you take another step

Whatever you are striving for
Look beyond to what is past it

Be willing to graciously open your arms
To welcome the opposite
Seizing it as an opportunity to sprout even higher

A little piece of everyone else can be found in you
We are all truly the same
Blind
Only to the fact that we all encompass part of another

Even our worst enemy is comparable to you
Don’t let the dark take away from you
If you are a beaming light

Instead treasure the opposite
Because it would not be there
if there wasn’t a trace of it in you

  1. The inspiration from the Tao Te Ching is really evident. I like the way you play with opposites and their seeds. The metaphors give good ways that Yin/Yang is applicable to a regular person's life.

  2. The short length of your stanza add emphasis to each of your lines.

  3. I love the way you related this poem back to the sprouting of a seedling. This, plus the image you added, really gives me this crisp image of someone emerging from their shell towards the sky above.
